How to choose desserts
Choosing the right pies and other desserts to have at your bakery, store or even your family get together can be a difficult task but, it can be especially tough if you want to break away from the usual items. When deciding, there are a few overarching things you should take into consideration:
The first is region or where you live and where your patrons or guests live. If you have a lot of tourists that come to your store, you may find out where most of them come from and offer a dessert that fits who they are or if you’re having out of town dinner guests, find out where they grew up or where they’re from and make a pie from that area. For instance, if your guests are from Georgia you might make a Georgia Peach pie – even if yours doesn’t turn out exactly like the ones from home, they will appreciate the gesture.
The next thing to consider is the season. This may seem like a natural since it’s hard to find fresh peaches in winter and so, making a fresh peach pie in January won’t really be possible. But, there are still things to consider. For instance, if it’s Summer, fresh berries and cream are always a hit but you might think about changing things up a bit and using a vanilla or other flavored cream to give your desserts that extra pizzazz. Pumpkin or apple are naturals for Fall but you can make your items stand out by adding cream cheese to the pumpkin for a different take on the traditional pumpkin pie. Or, add caramel sauce to your apple desserts to give your customers or your family/friends a special treat.
Another thing to think about is the source of your desserts. Are you making the dessert(s) yourself to either fill out your bakery or entertain guests if so, go easy on yourself. Even the simplest of desserts if done well will make a fantastic impression or boost sales. If, however, you are getting your desserts from a bakery, let them help you be creative. Have them make suggestions in terms of what pies and other desserts will make the kind of impression you’re looking for.
